Mushroom Exhibition at the Škofja Loka Museum

The natural environment of the Škofja Loka area is home to a rich variety of fungi. Most are inedible to humans, while a small but very important number are poisonous. Well over 100 species of mushrooms growing in our region, however, are edible and delicious.

But this is only one aspect of understanding the importance of fungi as organisms. They are an indispensable link in the functioning of the natural world. They help plants grow and thrive, break down dead woody biomass into the basic building blocks of soil, and form a kind of nervous system of the planet, helping the whole of nature function in harmony.

We will explore all this and much more at the mushroom exhibition beneath the castle arcades, which will be on display on 24 and 25 October.

You are also invited to join us for a free guided walk along part of the Loka Educational Trail on Sunday, 25 October, at 11 am. We will discover the life and characteristics of fungi and their habitats and learn how to identify the most typical species and genera we encounter along the way. We will meet in the courtyard of Loka Castle a few minutes before 11 am.
