Opening of the exhibition about the Sunday Christ Fresco
17. 6. 2026 @ 19:00
The Church of the Annunciation in Crngrob is one of Slovenia’s largest fresco art monuments. Throughout its long and eventful architectural history, the church has featured various frescoes created between the late 13th century and the second half of the 19th century. While some of them are well-preserved, others are either barely recognisable in situ or exist only as replicas.
The exhibition will focus on the best-known fresco, Sunday Christ, which dates back to the mid-15h century and is located on the church’s west-facing façade. In its original setting at the gallery in the Church of the Annunciation in Crngrob, individual fresco scenes will be explored through an ethnographic, art-historical, and historical lens.
The exhibition is part of the project Sacred Heritage Connects and Enriches aimed at expanding on the content, programmes and events focused on the preservation of cultural heritage that were prepared through the Around the Crngrob Church project.
Programme:
Opening speeches and exhibition presentation
Music by Audite! (Federica Io Pinto, Tilen Udovič, Janez Jocif), an early music ensemble, which will interpret selected songs from the Carmina Burana codex and medieval Marian hymns from the Cantigas de Santa Maria codex. The origins of the songs from both codices coincide with the establishment of the church in Crngrob. The Alfonso el Sabio collection is dedicated to Mary, the patroness of the Crngrob church, while in the Carmina Burana collection, the then clerics and vagabonds touched on some secular topics that are presented in the Sunday Christ fresco. Both aim to foster awareness and establish a proper relationship between the material and spiritual aspects of human existence.
