Opening of the Exhibition Bobbin Lace, “špice” in the Žiri Region

On This Merry Day of Culture, the Žiri Museum will open a new exhibition titled Bobbin lace aka “špice” in the Žiri region.

The exhibition and catalog present the development of bobbinlace making in the mentioned area through four time periods (Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, Kingdom of Yugoslavia, SFR Yugoslavia, Republic of Slovenia), each of which marked lace in its own way. For a long time, lace was only an important market item, the sale of which made it possible for people in Žirovsko to survive. During socialism, women were increasingly employed at the Alpina factory, where in addition to a higher salary for shorter working hours, they were also socially insured. Today, the people of Žiri are making bobbin lace more for their own pleasure than for sale.

The exhibition was created at the initiative of the Municipality of Žiri. It was professionally prepared by the Škofja Loka Museum in cooperation with the Cvetke Žiri Lacemaking Society, the Žiri Museum Society and the Žiri Lacemaking School.
